Work Like A Workaholic Without Being A Workaholic
One of the No. 1 attributes of the Super Achievers I know is that they are hard workers. Anything worth accomplishing takes the dedication of hard work.
If you want to be the exception, advance beyond your dreams, and earn respect as a leader in your field, devote more time to your work.
It takes hard work applied in a balanced fashion to get the most from your efforts. It is possible to work like a workaholic and still balance work with your personal life.
Below are some way to get started.
1
Eliminate Distractions In Your Life
Productivity is the name of the game when it comes to working. You want to accomplish a task as quickly and efficiently as possible.
The more distractions you entertain the longer it takes to get anything of importance done.
Eliminate distraction while you work.
These are some simple things you can do immediately:
- Learn to say "No". Let people know that you are not available to do anything during your working time.
- Use headphones or earplugs. Or find a quiet place to work
- Install productivity add-ons and site-blocking programs to your browser to avoid the temptation to dive into the Internet black-hole
- Put your phone on silent to avoid unnecessary calls and notifications.
There are many other things you can do. Just be creative so that you can concentrate on the important tasks.
2
Set Realistically Ambitious Goals
If you're having a hard time staying on track, it may help to see if the goals you set are realistic. It's OK to be ambitious with your goals, but make sure the ones you set are achievable.
Start by prioritizing them to come up with the most important ones. Then, figure out a timeline for their completion with a concrete deadline.
Sometimes just having a deadline is all you need to get motivated to work harder.
Setting goals that are completely out of reach has a negative long-term affect on your morale.
3
Break Big Projects Down Into Manageable Parts
Now that you have prioritized your goals, if you've started to tackle the biggest ones first, break them down into smaller chunks.
Complete some of the smaller tasks first to get the momentum going. Then work on bigger and harder tasks.
The important thing is not to let large goals seem so intimidating that you feel over whelmed. Just start something small, even if the task seems insignificant.
4
Inspire Greatness In Others
If the work you are involved in requires the help of other people, then exhibit your leadership skills by inspiring others to be at their best.
In other words, if you want to become a great worker, inspire others to do the same. You don't have to be a supervisor to inspire greatness.
Take every opportunity to help others with their duties and be the example of the definition of a hard worker. Soon others will follow your example.
5
Schedule Time For Breaks
Workaholics should spend much of their time working, but not every second of every day. Schedule break times like you would schedule a meeting, and keep that appointment.
Taking occasional breaks recharges your body and mind. This can also help with maintaining a good mood, which helps your disposition.
Hard workers are not machines. Therefore, it is essential to take breaks to stay effective in your efforts.
6
Don't Work During Off Hours
Days off for vacations, sick days, holidays, and days dedicated to family time, should not be spent doing work.
They serve as rebuilding and recharging times. Don't work during those times. Take that time to reset your attitude, brighten up your outlook, and replenish your energy reserves.
If you are really pressed, work as much as you can before your time off. That way you can spend your off time workfree.
7
Get Plenty Of Sleep
Believe it or not, sleep can determine how difficult your day can be, if you don't get enough of it. You can quickly loose focus, become easily irritated, and can become completely off track.
To avoid these problems, get a good night's sleep. Everybody is different, but on average, most people need 7-9 hours to feel fully rested.
When you do, it becomes much easier to focus on your work. It has other benefits like keeping your immune system strong and helps decrease the likelihood that you will loose work because of illness.
To function on a regular basis at optimal health, get a good 7-9 hours sleep.
8
Maintain Interests Outside Of Work
The big threat for a workaholic is contracting "burn out".
Though work should be a major focus, having outside interests can help you stay motivated and keep "burn out" at bay.
Don't neglect to keep in touch with friends, keep you hobbies going, and find fun new interesting things to do.
These things enrich the quality of your life, and create a variety of experiences you can cherish for a long time.
Find time to spend with the people who mean the most to you.
9
Find Meaning In Your Job
The work you are doing right now might not be perfect work that you absolutely love. However, if you can find something satisfying, you can hold on to, it puts meaning in what you do.
When you can find that meaning, you are more likely to happily invest the necessary time it takes to do your best work.
If you can find even one satisfying thing in the work you do, that thing can provided the satisfaction that allows you to take pride in what you do.
Know the reason why you are working so hard. That "why" can make you feel like you are contributing to the betterment of this world.
10
Motivate Yourself
Once you understand your reason for working so hard, the job of self motivation become a lot easier.
Motivate yourself by thinking about what your end game is. What is it that you will achieve when your workday is done? Who are you working for or providing for?
During the daily grind of things, it's easy to forget your end purpose. That's the time to remind yourself about the real meaning for doing what you do.
Find your meaningful reason for working and use that to motivate you throughout the day.
Conclusion
Every "Super Achiever" I know fully understands that achieving anything worthwhile in life requires hard work.
Hard work can bring you many rewards but the danger is maintaining a strong work ethic, and living a balanced life. You can have both.
To work at your peak performance level, eliminate the unnecessary distractions that creep into your working day. When you do, the time it takes to get things done will be a lot faster.
To gain even more productivity, set ambitious, but realistic goals. Big goals are achievable when you can break them down into manageable chunks.
Even if you consider yourself a worker, you can inspire others by helping them accomplish their task. That sets an example that can affect your whole organization.
Since you are not a machine, schedule time in your day to take breaks to recharge your batteries. When you take some off time, please don't work. It is time to refresh your energies.
Stay healthy by getting a lot of sleep and engage in outside interests and hobbies that have nothing to do with work.
Finding meaning in your job means know that one thing about your work that inspires you to be your best. Identifying this "why" is your source of self-motivation.
