Building More Trust With Family, Friends, and Peers

Stereotype

Super Achievers are not the only ones who will need to develop trusting relationships to reach their goals. Anyone wanting to develop meaningful relationships will always find that learning to build trust is an asset.

When you can help another person feel they can be vulnerable, without the fear of retribution, that is called real trust.

When people trust you, they want to help you succeed. do business with you, and extend that trust back to you.

If you are ready to put in some effort, you can learn to quickly develop trust and build better relationships that last a lifetime.

Try some of these tips.

1

Do What You Say

Planning

Trust is predicated around this one critical piece of the puzzle. Simply do what you say.

When you back up your words with action, you are building a strong foundation from which trust can be built.

No matter how small it may seem, failing to follow through creates hairline fractures in your trustworthiness.

Repeat these failures, and people will see you as untrustworthy. That is a reputation you don't want to get.

Instead, do the right thing and do what you say you'll do.

2

Make Good On Your Promises

Compliment

Doing what you say is one thing, but making a promise carries a lot more weight.

When you make a promise, you must keep it. Trust requires that people believe you will be dependable now and for the long-term.

If you truly can't keep a promise you've made, and have a legitimate reason, explain face-to-face. Especially if your promise was a major one.

If you get another chance, make another promise and keep it this time. It may take a while to gain the ground you lost, but keep it up.

3

Be Consistent

Consistency and trust go hand-in-hand. It is really hard to develop trust with only a few trusting acts in place.

Real trust is developed over a long period of time. One trusting event at a time, over a long period of time, make for a good foundation of trust.

Consistent follow through creates reliability. Reliability builds trust.

4

Tell The Truth

Get A Support Team

Sometimes there are situations where telling the complete truth may not put you in the best light. Then you have a choice to make. Tell a little lie to save face or tell the complete truth.

When you make the choice to tell the complete truth.  there are some huge benefits. The most important things is that when you tell the truth, even at your expense, you show that your relationship with another person is the most import thing.

5

If You Do Lie, Admit It

Don't take it personally

If you do lie for what ever reason, admit it.

Sometimes things get out of control and you find yourself lying through your teeth. Seems unavoidable at times.

When that happens, think about the relationship. You don't want to sacrifice that trust you're developing. So, get back on track by admitting that you've lied.

Explain your motives and be sincere about your remorse. Hopefully, you will gain their trust back just by being honest.

6

Speak From The Heart

Understand Each Other

One of the fastest ways to build trust is to speak genuinely from the heart. Find a common anchor point that you both can agree on.

Then, start talking from the heart in some open dialog. That openness will bring more trust and closeness. Keep the communication going.

Don't forget to make it a point to do some intensive listening. It can be good to use helpful phrases like "It seems to me" or "I believe that". These shows that you are open to other people's point of view.

7

Volunteer Information Freely

Keep Working

In the spirit of openness, there are times when the real facts may be a little hard to grasp. Things might not be as clear to others as they are to you.

Volunteer the information you have that could help clarify the confusion. Soon people will view you as a good information source. Freely volunteering shows that you are forthright and are not holding anything back.

When others learn to rely on your information, they begin to trust you as a go-to person.

8

If You Are Not Willing To Share Certain Information, Say So

Set Boundaries

On the other hand, there are certain things that you should not share with just anyone.

Personal information shouldn't be sacrificed just to build trust. You have a right to control your personal secrets.

The key to being trustworthy while also maintaining your privacy is to make your boundaries clear.

If you are not willing to share certain personal information, just say so. People will understand that you can protect sensitive information, whether it's your personal information or the information they share with you.

9

Keep Secrets Told To You

Get Over Yourself

The quickest betrayal of trust is telling someone's story if that person doesn't want it told.

Everyone is human and will slip under pressure. You many not be even realize that you are violating their trust by sharing information about another person.

However, when this happens, own up to it quickly. You may even have to go to the person and apologize to them in person.

This way, the person won't find out from someone else that you are the one who leaked the information. By then the damage may be done, but at least you can try to minimize it.

10

Display Loyalty

Displaying loyalty means showing your willingness to protect others and be on their side through thick and thin.

This applies whether they are in your presence or not. It becomes a matter of principle.

Trust becomes solid when a person knows he or she has your back. When people can trust that you will support them no matter what, that demonstrates loyalty.

Everyone at one point in their lives will want to build trusting relationships with family, friends, and peers.

Trust is the solidifying key to make it all work. So it is imperative that you learn the tools to help you build lasting trust.

To start, get in the habit of doing what you say you will do. When others see you doing this, time after time, it starts to build a foundation of trust.

This is really important to do, especially if you promise to do something. Keeping your promises really builds a level of trust that is hard to dispute.

Building trust takes time, so be consistent over a long period of time. Every trusting act builds on each other.

I know you already do this, but just as a reminder, always tell the truth. If you fall short on this one, go directly to the person and admit you lied.

Speak from the heart and volunteer any information that you deem helpful.

Keep your personal information private, and don't share information that someone told you in confidence.

Lastly, display your loyalty whether the person is in your presence or not.

Trusting relationships are at the heart of all long-lasting relationships. The more you develop, the better your life will be.

You can do this.
